KINGSFORD — Does it seem like summer is slipping by too fast? Someone said they have already seen maple leaves changing color. What a summer it has been.

It seems impossible to participate in all the activities planned around the community and with family. Get out your pencil and calendar and fill in as many of those little squares as you can. Tackle one day at a time. Golden K seniors automatically set aside Mondays for their meeting. The rest of the week will fall into place as it may.

The group arrives at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford with excited chatter, hugs, and smiles. Of course there are coffee and donuts on the tables.

Alyce Derwinski gets those black-and-white keys melodically filling the room, as Lois Outcelt leads the singing of “God Bless America.” Life does not get any better than that. Music enthusiast Outcelt brings these voices into one great chorus thoroughly celebrating Monday morning.

Adding more excitement to the day, Ben Determan gladly collected winnings from the 50-50 drawing. Gary Proudfit shared Happy Dollar thoughts of special time spent with family, and welcoming Al and LaVerne Calcari back after an extended absence. All were grateful for the recent annual picnic. A special thank you went to Joan Jouppi and The Daily News for their efforts in sharing stories with the community.

Chairperson Joan Jouppi introduced two guest speakers from the Salvation Army. Director Tara Blagec Coss and Case Manager Jennifer Witte updated the group on the support work provided by the Salvation Army.

These two women work to bring comfort, support, and stability to countless people in need. “A hand up, rather than a hand out” is the organization’s motto. They encourage clients to become and remain self-sufficient.

They offer assistance with emergency expenses for utilities, housing, and transportation. They maintain a food and clothing bank.

Each case is evaluated and resources are pulled together to provide a hand up and a safe environment.

Services are by appointment and involve a caring intake interview.

There is currently a backpack project scheduled for Monday. This provides the essential school commodity of backpacks with supplies. The clothing room will be open as well.

Those Red Kettles you see around the holidays are a primary revenue source for the Salvation Army. It’s a beautiful, easy way to support their efforts. You can be a volunteer ringer for just a couple of hours one day, or with a financial contribution. They recently helped an individual get a place to live, a job, and a new start within three days.

The Salvation Army is connected to many local resources and ready to help out. If you, or someone you know is in need, give them a call. These two ladies do not let challenging circumstances prevent them from getting help for clients.

The Salvation Army operates from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday. The food pantry is available to needy families at the above times, with a veterans priority pantry available on Fridays. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 906-779-5717.

The next guest speaker will be local author Carol Schultz. The Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. They will have donuts and coffee ready.
